Feeding The Yorkshire Terrier Puppy
Yorkie pups begin eating on their own at about 6 weeks. They will need until about 12 weeks old before they are old enough to eat dry food and be placed in their new home. Any breeders of pet Yorkies that are willing to sell a puppy prior to 12 weeks of age should be avoided.
I would caution you not to take your puppy home until a minimum of at least 12 weeks of age. They need this amount of time to be with their litter mates and mother. A critical developmental time in a puppy’s life is between 7 – 12 weeks. They learn many things from the mother and litter mates. A few of these is bite inhibition, and how to respond to other dogs.
By 12 weeks of age they should be eating dry dog food. If you like you can add a little canned if needed. Just be sure they eat well when being in a new environment.
Some pups may be afraid at first and may need some encouragement to eat. Some things you can try in feeding them is some cottage cheese mixed with their food. Or something else that can be tried is maybe a small piece of cheese. Keep in mind that too much canned food can give them an upset stomach and can cause loose stools. The main thing is to be sure they eat so they do not become hypoglycemic.
Most Yorkies do not like a lot of hard treats. There are small biscuits they can eat. Keep treats to a minimum as they will not eat their food if given to many.
Dog treats have a lot of salt and sugar in them. People food should not be fed to any dog. Small carrots, apples and other veggies are ok. No starchy or fatty foods. Only a HIGH QUALITY dog food should be fed. Please do not feed brands such as Old Roy or similar brands. Yorkies eat a small amount so a good quality food should be used. I would caution you from feeding any treats that are produced in China.
